Batik Paper Lanterns

Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique traditionally done on cloth. In this class, we'll change things up and create batik-style designs on paper using wax and watercolors. Waxed paper has a beautiful translucency - so what better use for our creations than to make one-of-a-kind paper lanterns/votive covers?

In this class, you’ll learn the fun and spontaneous process of pressure printing - a relief technique that uses collage and stencils directly on the press. The results are rich, painterly prints that are full of texture. This low-tech process allows you to quickly create layered, multicolored backgrounds and imagery.

We’ll start with learning the basics of using the Vandercook letterpress, experiment as a class with a variety of collage and stencil materials, and then create to our heart’s content!

This class is $60 and is lead by Rebecca, a printer and designer at Blackbird. All materials are provided, however students are also encouraged to bring their own found materials to experiment with. Anything thin and flexible could potentially be printed!

Say it Loud!

"Freedom of the press is only guaranteed to those who own one."

Before letterpress was Martha Stewart's choice for wedding invitations, it was used as a way to share information. With a printing press and moveable type, you could say anything and share it, in physical form and send it out to the masses. Like a letterpress printed tweet!

Learn about letterpress and handsetting wood and lead type in while making a broadside poster with Hope. Together we will plan a design, set it, print and take home a few prints each.  All materials are included.

Class is $50. Registration and pre-payment is required. Sign up here!

canceled---Paste Paper--a decorative paper technique

Invented by 16th century nuns, paste paper is an historical method of making decorative paper by hand. A mixture of pigment, wheat paste and water is moved across the surface of paper to create different patterns and textures. This is a fun and easy technique. Resulting papers can be used in a myriad of ways, from bookbinding to scrapbooking to collages.

This class is led by Jessica Peterson of The Southern Letterpress.  All materials are included with the $60  registration. Prepayment is required. Sign up online here
